How to Calculate Domestic Worker Benefits

In the UAE, just like employees in companies, domestic workers are entitled to end-of-service benefits. However, unlike corporate setups where HR handles severance pay, families employing housemaids and nannies must navigate this process themselves.

Calculating these benefits can be complex, especially when various factors come into play. What happens if the domestic worker resigns without reason? Or if they are unfairly dismissed? What if the contract is breached? And can the employer demand compensation if the maid leaves before the contract ends?

To streamline this process, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (Mohre) has developed an online calculator. This tool simplifies determining the end-of-service bonus based on different scenarios.

Here's a step-by-step guide to using the calculator:

Step 1: Gather Contract Details Ensure you have the employment contract readily available. This document contains vital information needed for calculation.

Step 2: Access Mohre's Official Website Visit https://www.mohre.gov.ae/ and navigate to the "Services" tab. From the drop-down menu, select "Domestic Workers Calculator"

Step 3: Input Basic Information Once on the calculator page, fill in the required details. This includes the contract start and end dates, the worker's salary, and the reason for their departure. Options include contract expiry, resignation without reason, resignation due to employer's breach, and termination without cause.

Step 4: Enter Unpaid Allowances Domestic workers may be entitled to additional benefits such as annual leave pay and compensation for work-related injuries. Input any unpaid allowances in the relevant fields provided.

The calculator automatically generates the total end-of-service benefits owed to the worker. If this amount is negative, it signifies that the worker owes the employer.

Using this calculator ensures compliance with regulations and facilitates fair compensation for both employers and domestic workers alike.
